UTSA to expand news storytelling tools to support university’s leadership trajectory
APRIL 14, 2025 --
UTSA is seeking input from students, faculty, staff, alumni and members of the university community to help guide enhancements to its primary storytelling resources to more powerfully reflect the university’s rise in prominence. University Strategic Communications is conducting two readership surveys to gauge perspectives about UTSA Today and Sombrilla Magazine beginning this month. The surveys opened today and will take 10-15 minutes to complete.
UTSA Today, the university’s official news source, receives 1.1 million visits each year. In addition to serving as the newspaper of record for UTSA, this news channel advances UTSA’s reputation, memorializes its history and cultivates a sense of pride across the university. Stories focus on UTSA’s impactful teaching and learning, research and discovery and community engagement.
Sombrilla Magazine, available in print and digital formats, is UTSA’s flagship magazine and is known for compelling storytelling that ties UTSA alumni and the greater Roadrunner community to the university. Its print issue is distributed without charge to 100,000 people each year.
“UTSA Today and Sombrilla Magazine are important communications channels in UTSA’s long-term strategy and vitality. They distinctively tell the university’s story, introducing so many to the students and alumni whose lives have been enriched by UTSA and to the innovators at the university who are defining their academic fields,” said Joe Izbrand, UTSA chief communications officer and associate vice president for strategic communications and external relations. “We encourage our readers and supporters of the university to join us in shaping the next generation of these impactful storytelling channels.”
